The Umbrella Movement Talks, And Some Probably Not Very Well Thought Out Remarks By Me

So apparently the talks between the student representatives and the government officials didn’t go too well.. Italics by me.

“In blunt remarks on Monday, Leung told reporters that free elections were unacceptable partly because they risked giving Hong Kong’s poor and working class a dominant voice. (Well we certainly wouldn’t want that now would we? Why give the people who work for their living any type of voice? Why give them a chance to make a difference or help?)

“If it’s entirely a numbers game and numeric representation, then obviously you would be talking to half of the people in Hong Kong who earn less than US$1,800 a month,” Leung said. (And whose fault is that Mr. Leung? Who has been the Chief Executive since 2012? Who could’ve changed that? And who hasn’t? So why use the fact that they earn less than $1,800 a month to say that they can’t have a voice?)

“Then you would end up with that kind of politics and policies,” added Leung, warning of the dangers of populism and insisting that the electoral system needed to protect minority groups. (PROTECT MINORITY GROUPS?! How is this protection? This is taking away their basic human rights to any type of voice, a voice that the people with the authority and power should be listening to. You are forcing them into a corner, and people don’t like that Mr. Leung.)

Critics say the political system already favours the rich in Hong Kong, which has one of the biggest wealth gaps in Asia and where the vast majority of people cannot afford their own home.” (Isn’t this just peachy keen? The rich stay rich and the poor stay poor. As long as no one starts thinking for themselves then everything is perfectly fine..) As stated by Yahoo news.
